Motus Wildlife Tracking System Tower Installation

The Motus Wildlife Tracking System (Motus) is an international collaborative research network that uses coordinated automated radio telemetry to facilitate research and education on the ecology and conservation of migratory animals. Motus is a program of Birds Canada in partnership with collaborating researchers and organizations.

In partnership with SC DNR, GA DNR, Manomet, and US Fish & Wildlife, we have equipped nanotags that provide satellite data on the movements of the rufa Red Knot and on Whimbrels during migration. These studies help us understand where their stopover sites are located, the timing and speed of their movements, as well as where they breed in the Arctic. These studies are currently going on! We have installed MOTUS towers at Sapelo Island, Ossabaw Island, and Oatland Island. We hope to install two more towers by the end of 2024!
