Partners within the Georgia Shorebird Alliance work together across the 14 barrier islands along the Georgia coast to band as many American Oystercatcher chicks as possible every year. Oystercatchers lay their nests on shell rakes, barrier island dune systems, and on tidal sandbars. When chicks are old enough to walk and their legs are big enough to band- but also too young to fly away from capture, partners go out and equip them with alphanumeric colored bands and a metal band. This allows us to record any resights of these chicks as they grow, migrate, and nest in their life spans.
